For those who do not have a background in the study of Tafsir, it is highly encouraged that they take the Advanced Quran Study course on Usul al-Tafsir and the Tafsir Literature as a precursor to this course. Students with full reading comprehension in the Arabic language and who have studied the basics in the sciences of Shari’ah. *Fluency in reading Arabic is a prerequisite.* – An advanced course focusing on study of Ibn `Āshūr’s magnum opus, al-Taḥrīr wa ‘l-Tanwīr, while also exploring the major classical works of Tafsīr. In sha Allāh, we will be covering Sūrat al-Fātiḥa and the whole of Sūrat al-Baqara. Students will be expected to read their lessons from the Tafsir of Ibn `Āshūr, which will then be discussed and analyzed in class, in comparison with the Tafsir tradition. This course will be a an opportunity to explore the Tafsir of the Qur’an via Ibn `Āshūr’s magnum opus, al-Taḥrīr wa ‘l-Tanwīr, and other works of Tafsīr. The book was published in 1984 through Tunisian House of Publication, consisted of 30 volumes, and considered one of the most important contemporary Qur'anic exegesis to this day.– An analytical study of Al-Taḥrīr wa ‘l-Tanwīr by by Al-`Allāmah Ibn `Āshūr رحمه الله – Term 1 – Ibn Ashur criticized the methodology that relies on the opinions by their predecessors without adding little scientific values, by attacking how people are delusional in concerning about the contradictions between the divine message and traditions. His approach is most notably characterized by his emphasis on the rhetorical aspect of the Qur'an, instead of relying completely on traditional interpretational science ( riwaya) employed by other mufassirs (author of tafsir) whom ibn Ashur criticized. The book is a culmination of his fifty years of work, and ibn Ashur poured in all of his innovative and reformist approaches toward hermeneutical engagement. Tafsir al-Tahrir wa'l-Tanwir ( Arabic: تفسير التحرير والتنوير, lit.'Interpretation of verification and enlightenment') is a work of Qur'anic exegesis ( tafsir) by Muhammad al-Tahir ibn Ashur, the contemporary Islamic scholar graduated from the University of Ez-Zitouna and the major figure within the Islamic Modernism movement.
